How often should you prune hedges in Auckland? A seasonal guide

Auckland's mild climate means hedges grow almost year-round. Here is when to trim for the best results and the healthiest growth.

Auckland's climate is kind to plants. Warm, wet winters and long growing summers mean hedges and shrubs rarely go fully dormant. That is great for a lush garden, but it also means regular trimming genuinely matters if you want neat, sculpted hedges rather than a sprawling mess.

For most formal hedges in central Auckland, two to three trims a year is the sweet spot. Here is a rough seasonal guide.

Spring, September to November. This is the most important time to trim. Growth surges after winter, and a good spring cut sets the shape for the whole season. If you only do one trim a year, make it September or October.

Late summer, February to March. A tidy-up cut to hold the shape through the rest of the warm season and before autumn growth slows. Not as deep as the spring cut, just enough to keep edges crisp.

Autumn or light winter, May to June. Optional for most species, but useful for fast growers like photinia or buxus. A light trim keeps things tidy over the cooler months and means less work in spring.

Fast-growing species need more. Hedges like photinia, griselinia or pittosporum can push out 30cm or more of growth a season in Auckland. Quarterly trimming is not excessive for these.

A note on timing. Avoid heavy cuts in the hottest part of summer, December to January. It can stress plants and leave cut ends exposed to harsh UV. Avoid trimming right before a frost too, though frosts are rare in the central suburbs.
